A LITTLE MORE ABOUT BRAD McENTIRE

Information that has a high potentiality of being irrelevant and extremely dull

Aliases: The D'Funkateer. Big Stack. The B-Funk. Big Mac. B-Mac. B-rad. Mr. Brad.

Religion: technically I'm of the Quaker/ Friends Church.

Edjumucation: I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre and Performance Arts (concentration in Acting and Directing) from a great school out in Santa Fe, New Mexico and a Master of Arts in Theatre (concentration in Playwriting) from a not-so-great school in Denton, Texas.

Occupation: Renegade improviser. playwright. stage director. sometime teacher. ass-kickin'-name-takin' performer.

D'Funk-Approved Directors: Philip Kaufman, Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, Curtis Hansen, Woody Allen, Qentin Tarantino, the Coen Brothers, Wes Anderson.

TV Will Rot Your Brain: And I mean that. Nothing is more fun to make fun of than people that drone there lives away in front of a television set. So, I don't watch tv. But in today's culture (or lack of it) one can't escape completely unscathed. I have in the past been hooked on shows such as 'House', 'Parker Lewis Can't Lose', 'Six Feet Under', 'The West Wing', 'Boston Legal', 'Ally McBeal (I feel shame)', 'The Simpsons (no shame!)' and recently 'Heroes.'

Authors That Make Me Salivate: Ernest Hemingway, Christopher Moore, Ian Fleming, Lewis Carroll, Sarah Vowell, David Mamet, Mac Wellman, Hunter S. Thompson, Aldous Huxley, Tennessee Williams, Michael Chabon, Richard Florida, Samuel Beckett, Edgar Allan Poe.

My Preferred Literary Device: Satire!

Fictional Characters I Have An Affinity For: The Peanuts characters, Barbarella, the characters from Krazy Kat, Calvin & Hobbs, Indiana Jones, Zorro.

Real Life Characters I Have An Affinity For: Composer and french horn player David Amram, Texas theatre visionary Paul Baker, East-meets-West actor Yoshi Oida, my friend and artistic colleague AV Phibes, improv wildcard Andy Eninger, Austin playwright makin' it happen Greg Romero, Dallas-based psycho actor Jeff Swearingen, my friend Will Harper (pound for pound probably the best actor I personally know).

What Fills Up the Rest of My Bookcase: My books and cases are presently in storage, but when I'm all set up they include texts of sociology, philosophy, spirituality, fitness, tons of biograghies, theatre-related books out the wahzoo, shiny-papered books about Modigliani and Picasso, plays, a fair share of 'classics' and lots of contemporary fiction.

Songs That I Could Listen To Ad Nauseum: Papa Don't Take No Mess (James Brown), Mr. Bojangles (as sung by Sammy Davis Jr.), They Can't Take That Away From Me (George and Ira Gershwin), Brown Eyed Girl (Van Morrison). Pretty much anything by John Legend, Billie Holiday, Etta James, Eminem, Ray Charles, Pharcyde, George Gershwin, Nancy Wilson, Tribe Called Quest, Johnny Cash, Frank Sinatra.

I Own Far Too Many: Books and things I keep for "achival reasons." I could also list: attempts at getting my act together.

Things That Disturb/Annoy Me: Most popular-culture (not because it is popular, but because it usually doesn't deserved to even be called culture). Most counter-culture. Especially so-called counter-culture. People who are way too into their own little sub-cultures. My Chinese Secondary School students, Hong Kong, American public high school schools, early morings, people that give unsolicited advice, wasted opportunity, ineptitude, the way my appetites win out over my discipline, people who walk too slow in public areas or who have no spacial awareness, people who try to get on the fucking train/elevator before people get off. General stupidity. Incompetence. Wasting time.

Random Things I Like: making lists, performing, bicycling, writing, pin-up girl art, being well-dressed as the occassion calls for it, civility, dancing, film history, discussing theatre until 4 am, graphic design, staying up way too late, cigars, confidence, people who actually know their shit, dada experiments, burlesque girls, promoting myself, virtuosity, sleeping late, the artwork of Modigliani, fondue, mythology, spotting archetypal structure in films, teaching those that actually want to learn, my family, my friends, low-budget jet-setting, shadow puppetry, painting, videography, public transportation, a good bag, recycling, old-school elegance.
